Newborn photography is a magical way to preserve the tiny, fleeting moments of your baby’s earliest days. But one of the most common questions parents ask is: “When is the best age for newborn photos?” The answer isn’t just about getting cute pictures—it’s about capturing your baby safely, comfortably, and beautifully.

Newborns grow and change incredibly fast. Features, expressions, and those tiny newborn curls shift almost daily. Capturing them at the right age ensures that their delicate details—the soft hair, tiny fingers and toes, and those peaceful sleepy expressions—are at their most photogenic.
Timing also impacts how relaxed and comfortable your baby is during the session. Younger babies tend to sleep more deeply, making classic curled-up newborn poses easier and safer to achieve.

Most professional photographers, including Chunky Monkey Photography, recommend scheduling newborn sessions between 5 and 14 days after birth. Here’s why:
Days 5–10: Babies are typically still very sleepy and flexible, making those iconic curled poses natural and comfortable.
By 2 Weeks: Babies are starting to become more alert and may have longer stretches of wakefulness, but careful posing and patience still allow for beautiful results.
After 2 Weeks: While newborn sessions are still possible, babies may begin to show more alertness, fussiness, or stiffness, which can make traditional poses more challenging.

It’s always best to book your newborn session before your baby arrives if possible. This allows for flexibility in scheduling, ensures availability, and gives you peace of mind that your memories will be captured at the perfect time.
At Chunky Monkey Photography, I work closely with parents to schedule sessions around your baby’s arrival, making adjustments as needed so the timing is just right.

The newborn stage is brief—what feels like weeks in the moment will pass in the blink of an eye. By photographing your baby at the ideal age, you’ll capture the most peaceful, adorable, and detailed images possible.
From tiny fingers and toes to sleepy expressions and natural curls, these images will become timeless keepsakes that you and your family will treasure forever.

With love,
